Why is water conservation important?

Water is fast becoming the precious commodity that oil was in the 20th century.  Demand far surpasses supply in a world where only 3% of all water on this planet is fresh. Of the 3% fresh water, nearly 70% consists of icecaps and glaciers with just ovr 30% in ground water. piesearthwherewater That leaves 0.3% of fresh water being surface water and this is made up of 87% in lakes, 1% in swamps and only 2% in rivers. Not only is quantity a problem in South Africa, but quality of municipal water has been highlighted more frequently in the press in recent years. The South African sewer systems are so overloaded that untreated sererage is passing straight into our rivers. Estuaries are nearly all dead. This has all happened in the last 10 years.
